Obituary
POVL WINNING TOUSSIENG   (5 Sep 1918 - 17 Nov 1997)

DAILY OKLAHOMAN  19 November 1997:
Povl Winning Toussieng, M.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, was born September 5, 1918 in Nysted Denmark and died November 17, 1997 in Oklahoma City. A native of Denmark, Dr. Toussieng completed high school and college there and received his M.D. degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1945. After his Danish internship, he served as a medical officer in the Royal Danish Navy.

After a brief practice in Denmark, he came to the United States in 1949 for psychiatric residency and advanced training in child psychiatry at the Menninger Clinic at Topeka, Kansas. He was then on the staff at Menninger's for ten years. Dr. Toussieng came to OU. as Associate Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatrics in 1965 where he filled many positions until he retired as Training Director of the Child Psychiatry Program in 1987. For  ten years, he  continued to teach, write, consult and supervise mental health trainees, often on a volunteer basis.

Dr. Toussieng's honors, awards, publications, professional memberships and community activities number in the hundreds. His positive impact on the lives of Oklahoma's children is immeasurable. Nearly every child psychiatrist practicing in this part of the country has been a beneficiary of his life-long wish to teach about and advocate for children. Dr. Toussieng is survived by his sister, Agnete Tryde, and his brother-in-law, Torbin Tryde of Sollested Denmark and multiple nieces and nephews and cousins.

Notes for Frederik Emil Winning Toussieng:
Always known by the name Emil. Lt. Colonel, veterinarian. First Lieutenant 1910; resigned as Captain when the army reduced its forces drastically in 1921. The reduction happened because the Danish government having succeeded in remaining neutral during WWI felt they would be able to main this status if ever threatened. This reduction caused most highly capable officers to resign. They knew that the terms of the treaty in Versailles were so unrealistic that it virtually insured another war.
Emil had a brilliant mind. Graduated as a veterinarian from the university 1928 practiced as a veterinarian in Fjerritslev 1928-1931. Founder and Head of the internationally known State Veterinarian Research station on the island Lindholm 1935-45. The buildings of the center completely covered the small island.
Though he would be sorely missed in the scientific world, events and his sense of duty drew Emil back to the army. Lt. Colonel of the Reserve 1941. Head of Resistance movement Region V 1945 imprisoned (like his brother and father) by the Gestapo. Chief of Staff at the Boarder Command; Chief of the Welfare Command of the Danish Brigade in Germany. Demobilized.
