John Jones Moore
Monday February 19, 1935 saw the passing of another Confederate Soldier and old settler of the highland and Eastern Oklahoma.
John Moore, better known as uncle John to hundreds of friends through the Co. passed away at 4; p. m. at the age of 90. He was born in TX, November 11, 1844. (My note - error on birthplace, it was AL)
Next to the oldest of 12 children (My note - he was 4th oldest) born to Rev. and Mrs. S. L. Moore, he enlisted in the war Between the States shortly before his 21st birthday. He served as a member of Guano's Brigade with the TX Rangers. Shortly after the war he married Miss. Jane Hensley in TX and moved his family to Arkansas around 1870, settling near Old Dallas, then to Zafra, OK where he resided for 56 years raising a family of 7 boys and 4 girls. The sons were Joe, William, Ode, Wesley, and Shade. The three daughters were Tacy Lula (Eubanks, Mowdy), Mrs. Will Hamiter and Mrs. Jack Williams (Emma). There were 53 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren at the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death by 44 years. John Jones Moore laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cem, near the Arkansas/Oklahoma border.

Civil War Information
John Jones left his home in June of 1862 to enlist in the Confederate Army. He served in the Infantry, Ochiltrees Regiment, Maples Company and Young's Brigade until the spring of 1863. He then contacted measles and was released from the Army at Pine Bluff, AR. He made his way home to Rusk, TX on foot, hiding in the woods for days with fever so high he was delirious and had lost all track of time. He had to swim the Red River and probably several other creeks and streams before he finally arrived in Rusk, TX. He remained in Rusk until the autumn of 1863 at which time he joined the Calvary, Company T, Martins Regiment, Gano's Brigade and served till the end of the Civil war, in 1865.
He was honorably discharged at Fort Bend Co, TX at Richmond. During the three years he was in the army he was only slightly wounded, in the right arm, while fighting in the Battle of Pea Ridge, AR.
