OBITUARY: 13 November 1974

SITLINGTON, Mrs. Sarah Bailey, 82, of Route 2, Edmond; 11 a/m. Wednesday in Baggerly Funeral Home with private burial services pending at Olive Hill Cemetery, west of Edmond.

Sarah (Sallie) Bailey was two years of age when her parents, Rufus and Elizabeth Bailey, moved to their new home in Oklahoma Territory. She received her early education at Scott School, attended Sunday school and church with her family and played the organ for Sunday school. Sallie attended Central State Normal School at Edmond, for one full year and summers thereafter. She taught her first year at the Carpenter School in Oklahoma County in 1910-11 and returned the next fall to teach the next year. She also taught two years at the Diamond School in Canadian County in 1911. She was married on August 4 1912 to Thomas O. Sitlington.

The Sitlington farm was located on 150th Street between Meridian and MacArthur Avenues (now Oklahoma City). She enjoyed working with crops, managed the farm well, and accumulated great land holdings and large herds of cattle. Sallie maintained her interest in cattle marketing throughout her lifetime and gave no thought to retiring. She found great pleasure in her accomplishments, and at the age of 83 years remarked to her family: "I have had a good life".

OBITUARY: 04 August 1995

SITLINGTON Walter R., age 81, died August 1st, 1995. Walt was the grandson of two Oklahoma pioneer families, Rufus Miner and Elizabeth McKeage Bailey and Walter L. and Charlotte Belt Sitlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas O. and Sarah Bailey Sitlington. Walt was born March 21, 1914 in rural Edmond and spent his live in farming, ranching and dairy farming in Oklahoma, Logan, and Grady Counties and in Kansas. He will be missed by his many cousins and their families as well as a wide variety of friends. He will also be remembered by several charitable and educational organizations to whom he made generous contributions. Memorial services will be Friday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Demuth Funeral home 1145 West Britton Road. Interment services will be private at Olive Hill Cemetery.

Walter R. Sitlington lived a quiet, hard-working life as a dairy farmer and rancher in Oklahoma City. He never attended Oklahoma State University, but he bequeathed his estate to OSU for research in agriculture and veterinary medicine, with a special emphasis on preventing diseases that affect farm animals. The gift is the largest estate bequest in OSU history. "His concern was not for himself, but for future generations. His precious gift will have a tremendous impact on our faculty and students, and on farmers and ranchers across the state," OSU President James Halligan said. Halligan described Walter as "a truly great Oklahoman who went beyond success to significance ." A descendant of Oklahoma pioneers, Walter was interested in research to solve food production problems and to create markets for state farmers and ranchers. His gift to OSU will be used for endowed faculty positions, student scholarships and equipment. A previous gift of Walter's helped create a veterinary medicine endowment to support an OSU professor's research of stress-related diseases in cattle, and another previous endowment was for food processing technology. Walter wanted people in agriculture to do better economically .
